Keep an eye on your engine check light. If this comes on, you want to get your vehicle into a service station for analysis. If it the check engine light flickers or comes on periodically, this may be an early warning sign. Take advantage of it by finding a reputable service station or repair shop to analyze your engine systems.
Transmission Tip
Desert terrain is really hard on automobile transmissions too. When travelling the Utah desert or Canyonlands, flushing your transmission fluid regularly maintains your vehicle’s performance. Transmissions should be flushed about every 30,000 miles. Just like your oil, transmission fluid breaks down. You want to keep the viscosity to assure it gives you the performance you need.

Major Services occurs every 30-60,000. This differs from a Normal service in that you: tune up, change spark plugs, changing brakes, changing fluid oil, transmission, brake and coolant.
Severe Service. On your Severe Service you would be looking at the parts of your vehicle sooner to assure your safety. If you think you need your vehicle needs to be checked or fixed, be sure you use a Licensed Safety Inspector.
When you go into the desert you go on the Severe Service maintenance interval because of the high heat, the severe grades and the fine sand in the air. Your air filter will clog more quickly than when driving your car or truck in the city.
On Severe Service check, be sure to have checked: air filter, oil filter, belts, spark plugs, hoses, tires, brakes, all suspension parts, ball joint, tie rod ends, U joints, CV boots. Checking these can provide you the assurance that your vehicle will be safe travelling Moab and the desert canyonlands of Utah.
